New Student Services

AGSA's new student services represent one of our most impactful and appreciated programs. Understanding that the first few weeks in a new country can be overwhelming, we've developed comprehensive support systems:

Airport Pickup and Transportation: Our volunteer network provides complimentary airport pickup services for newly arriving students. Whether you're arriving at Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport or the larger Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport, our team coordinates to ensure safe, reliable transportation to your temporary accommodation. This service eliminates the stress and confusion of navigating unfamiliar transportation systems while carrying luggage and dealing with jet lag. Temporary Housing Assistance: We maintain an extensive network of temporary housing options, including host families within the AGSA community, short-term rental arrangements, and connections with other international students who can provide temporary accommodation. Our housing coordinators work with new students to understand their specific needs, budget constraints, and preferences to match them with appropriate temporary housing while they search for permanent accommodation. Visa and Immigration Support: The U.S. immigration system can be complex and intimidating. Our experienced members and alumni provide guidance on visa applications, document preparation, and compliance requirements. We organize information sessions led by immigration attorneys, host document review sessions, and maintain connections with legal resources for more complex cases. Virtual Pre-Arrival Mentorship: Before students even leave their home countries, we connect them with current AGSA members through our virtual mentorship program. These mentors provide practical advice about academic programs, housing options, cultural adaptation, financial planning, and academic expectations. This connection helps reduce anxiety and allows new students to make informed decisions about their LSU experience.

Ongoing Programs

Academic Mentorship Program: We pair new graduate students with senior students or recent graduates in their academic fields. These mentorship relationships provide guidance on course selection, research opportunities, thesis and dissertation development, academic conference participation, and publication strategies. Mentors also help navigate departmental politics, funding opportunities, and career planning within academia.

Professional Development Workshops: Our workshop series addresses the unique needs of international graduate students in the American academic and professional environment. Topics include:

  • Resume and CV writing tailored for the American job market
  • Interview skills and professional networking strategies
  • Academic conference presentation techniques
  • Grant writing and research funding applications
  • Career planning for both academic and industry paths
  • Entrepreneurship and business development for international students

Research Collaboration Network: AGSA facilitates interdisciplinary research collaborations among members. We organize research symposiums, maintain a database of member research interests, and create opportunities for collaborative projects that can enhance publication records and grant applications.

Cultural Preservation and Celebration

Cultural Events and Celebrations: Throughout the academic year, AGSA organizes numerous cultural events that celebrate the rich diversity of African heritage:

  • African Heritage Month celebrations featuring traditional music, dance, and storytelling
  • Independence Day celebrations for various African nations
  • Cultural food festivals showcasing cuisine from different regions of Africa
  • Traditional dress events and fashion shows
  • Music and arts showcases featuring African artists and AGSA member talents
  • Film screenings of African cinema with cultural discussions

Language and Cultural Exchange: We organize language exchange programs where members can practice and maintain their native languages while also improving their English skills. Cultural exchange sessions allow members to share traditions, customs, and histories from their home countries.

Social Integration and Community Building

Social Activities and Recreation: Recognizing that graduate school can be socially isolating, AGSA organizes regular social activities:

  • Soccer tournaments and recreational sports leagues
  • Game nights and social mixers
  • Movie screenings followed by cultural discussions
  • Outdoor adventures and LSU campus tours for new students
  • Holiday celebrations and potluck dinners
  • Weekend trips to nearby cultural attractions

Family Support Programs: Many of our members have families, and AGSA provides support for spouses and children through family-oriented events, childcare coordination during meetings, and connections with local resources for family needs.
