The African Graduate Student Association (AGSA) at Louisiana State University stands as a beacon of unity, support, and cultural pride for African graduate students pursuing advanced degrees in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Established with the fundamental understanding that international students face unique challenges when navigating academic life in a foreign country, AGSA was created to bridge the gap between academic excellence and cultural identity preservation. AGSA represents more than just a student organization—it embodies the spirit of African community values, where collective support, shared experiences, and mutual empowerment form the cornerstone of student success. The association recognizes that graduate school can be an isolating experience, particularly for international students who must simultaneously adapt to new academic systems, cultural norms, and social environments while maintaining their cultural identity and pursuing rigorous academic goals.
Vision: To be the premier support network for African graduate students at LSU, fostering academic success, professional development, and cultural pride while building lasting connections within our community and beyond. Mission: AGSA exists to unite, build, and help African graduate students thrive. We unite students from diverse African backgrounds and academic disciplines, build comprehensive programs and resources that provide tangible benefits to our members, and create an environment where every member can thrive academically, professionally, and personally. Our mission is anchored on three fundamental principles: 1. UNITE: Strengthening bonds between African students across all departments and academic programs 2. BUILD: Developing robust programs, partnerships, and resources that provide measurable benefits 3. THRIVE: Empowering each member to excel academically, grow professionally, and flourish personally
AGSA operates on five fundamental values that guide every decision, program, and interaction within our community: Unity: We bring together students from across the African continent and all academic disciplines, recognizing that our diversity is our strength. Unity doesn't mean uniformity—we celebrate our different cultures, languages, and perspectives while working toward common goals. Excellence: We maintain the highest standards in all our academic and professional pursuits. Excellence is not just about achieving good grades; it encompasses leadership, innovation, community service, and personal development. Service: We are dedicated to serving not only our members but also the broader LSU community and the city of Baton Rouge. Service is an integral part of African culture, and we carry this tradition forward in our American academic environment. Cultural Pride: We celebrate and preserve our diverse African heritage and traditions. Cultural pride means understanding where we come from, sharing our rich histories with others, and ensuring that our cultural identities remain strong even as we adapt to new environments. Innovation: We continuously improve our programs, services, and approaches to meet the evolving needs of our members. Innovation drives us to find creative solutions to challenges and to pioneer new ways of supporting graduate student success.
